COVID sparks PROP Relaunch

Mental Health Initiative Adds Videos

Awareness campaign People Reaching Out to People (PROP) has relaunched its educational program, as the coronavirus pandemic is expected to affect more people’s mental health

Mental health awareness campaign People Reaching Out to People (PROP) has relaunched its educational campaign, 12 months after the start of the coronavirus pandemic in Australia.

The relaunch includes new material to complement its existing tutorials on mental health, which aim to reduce the stigma around the subject.

The organisation has added two videos to each of its four tutorials. Each of the videos features an individual with firsthand lived experience around the subject matter within its respective tutorial.

“We believe that the combination of written tutorials with lived experienced videos provides a strong foundation for those seeking to help end the stigma around mental health,” Rob Prugue, Founder of PROP, said.

Rates of suicide and other mental health illness tend to rise dramatically about a year after a global economic shock, Prague said.

“This was true after the global financial crisis (GFC) as it was after the Asian financial crisis, to name just two, and it is expected, sadly, to also be true post the onslaught of COVID-19.”

PROP was launched in November 2016 with the aim to help people “unlearn the social stigma” around mental health. This social stigma can often interfere with the ability to properly engage and empathise with those who need our moral support, Prugue said.

“At the completion of the four tutorials, we ask the reader to please help us by “paying-it-forward” and recommending PROP’s educational campaign to their family and friends. It takes a village…”
